Great Expectations - 1 1/2 page essay
Write 1 1/2 pages answering just one of the five questions below. You will have to write clearly, crisply, economically, and efficiently if you hope to say anything of value in the restricted space available to you. Please follow the format recommendations described in the Newton North Writing Handbook. [double spaced, 12 point font. I'm thinking all that separate title page stuff that he likes too.]
1. Compare Miss Havisham to Abel Magwitch. Specifically, how are the two alike? Please use specific evidence from the text (and at least two short quotations) to illustrate and support your statements. [Mr. Grant mentioned the two stories about how they were both screwed over, the one about Miss Havisham told by Herbert and the one about Magwitch told by himself. I think he's expecting us to take stuff out of those stories.]
2. Discuss some (more than one) of the central ironies that have emerged in the book through page 359 (through chapter 47), particularly concerning some of the recent plot revelations. Please use specific evidence from the text (and at least two shorts quotations) to illustrate and support your statements. [The thing that throws me off about this one is how he says "central" ironies. I figure "central" means it actually has to do something with the main plot of the book, so I'm thinking screw this one.]
3. Consider the intertwining stories of Compeyson and Magwitch. How is Dickens's description of the personal histories of the two men a direct attack on the class system? Please use specific evidence from the text (and at least two short quotations) to illustrate and support your statements.
4. In a book full of mysteries, Jaggers is in many ways the most mysterious character in the book - despite his apparent boldness. Consider the conversation between Pip and Jaggers on pages 310 - 312 (chapter 40) concerning the newly discovered identity of Pip's benefactor. As a result of his learning the truth of the matter, Pip's prospects are sunk as he feels completely at sea. [Sunk at sea? Mr. Grant, using literary techniques! woot. woot.]
Consider :
To what extent is Jaggers morally responsible for Pip's shock and current distress?
To what extent is Wemmick morally responsible for Pip's shock and current distress?
Answer :
Which of the two men is more guilty of betraying Pip? Or perhaps neither of them are? [unnecessary question mark.]
Explain, and please use specific evidence from the text (and at least two short quotations) [Do we see a recurring theme in this direction sheet?] to illustrate and support your answers.
5. Consider the symbolism of Jaggers's...
* washing his hands *pocket watch *handkerchief *two casts on a shelf [all those "*"s were bulelts on the sheet. I didn't know how to bullet so I just did the asterisks.]
Speculate on the symbolic meaning of threeof the items listed above, and please use specific evidence from the text (and at least two short quotations) to illustrate and support yoru statements.
